Dr. Michelson is the Director of the Center for Platelet Research Studies and the Director of the Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Service at Children's Hospital Boston. He received his medical degree with honors from the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1974. Dr. Michelson continued his medical training on a Fulbright Scholarship at Children’s Hospital Boston, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. He was subsequently at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he was Director of the Center for Platelet Function Studies, Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Pathology, and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Michelson’s clinical and research expertise includes thrombosis and bleeding disorders. He is the editor of the textbook “Platelets” (Elsevier/Academic Press). The first edition, published in 2002, was the winner of the Best Book in Medical Science award from the Association of American Publishers. The 71-chapter, 1300-page second edition of “Platelets” was published in 2007. Dr. Michelson is the past Chairman of the Platelet Physiology Scientific Subcommittee of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC), International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). He has been an invited participant at 12 international consensus conferences and workshops, including Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy: American College of Chest Physicians Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines (1995 – present). Dr. Michelson is the inventor on 2 U.S. patents.

Dr. Michelson has published over 350 original research articles, original research abstracts, and invited reviews. He has been the principal investigator on more than 80 grants. Dr. Michelson has been an invited speaker at over 130 major medical conferences worldwide.
